Voltage has announced Kakan Ruirui: The Caged Lantern of Yomi. The brand-new title is an otome game for Nintendo Switch under their AmuLit brand, and it will be available in English and Japanese in 2027.
Currently, the developer has only teased the initial informations. The game’s being developed as a collaboration between Voltage and Toei Animation, and developer HYDE (Digimon Survive) is also involved in the project.
Kakan Ruirui is being written by Ririka Yoshimura, whose previous works include Cupid Parasite and AmuLit’s Neon Clash: Echoes of the Lost. She also assumes the role of co-director alongside Voltage’s Rei Misaki.
Meanwhile, the illustrator will be Yone Kazuki, the original illustrator behind hit otome Hakuoki as well as titles like Kamigami no Asobi, Koroshiya to Strawberry and Chronicles of Refugia -Alice the Red-. Other members of the team include background illustrator Naohiro Yuki, composer Yamato from Heart Company, and theme song performer Arika.
Currently, as far as further details go, the only thing we know is that the game will be a Japanese-inspired dark fantasy. A tragic/dramatic tone is also expected as the tagline for the story is “It all begins with a life lost.” The protagonist is hinted to be lost and have an unyielding personality in the first visual teaser.
The game’s first teaser video will debut November 7 at the AmuLit booth at Animate Girls Festival 2026, which will be held at Sunshine City in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. The reveal of the main characters will be done at 12h JST that day through the game’s official X/Twitter account.
