The point of having a placeholder system in a game is for it to be removed and replaced with something better later, but sometimes game devs need to have that work jump ahead in the queue because the placeholder is reviled by players. That seems to have been the case for the class XP system of Camelot Unchained, which now has better XP functionality after players apparently made their feelings very well known on the old system.
The MMO’s test build that opened this past weekend brought changes like XP earnings from dealing damage to foes and healing allies in RvR, shared XP from killing players and capturing objectives, and more level variety for gathering nodes as well as new node levels to make gathering XP feel better too.
“Historically we knew that the [class experience] system being replaced wasn’t anyone’s particular favorite. […] What we did not realize was to what extent it was disliked,” Unchained Entertainment opens. “We hadn’t been receiving much feedback about it before Class Progression was implemented, so we thought players were mostly ambivalent about it. Obviously, we were wrong there.”
Another aspect of the game that got some polish in this update was its control, with improvements made to avatar turning, movement, and jumps, along with some quality-of-life features like UI improvements, the addition of respec vendors, and bigger stacks for various consumables. Finally, there were updates for those who like to fight as a group, with new keybinds added to assist friendly targets, follow a party member, and stick to enemy targets.
source: official site MMORPG Camelot Unchained, Kickstarted in 2013, has taken flak over the years thanks to delays, the launch and sunset of a second game using CU’s custom engine, and refund drama. The game entered its “beta one” phase back in 2018, putting 3000 humans and bots on the battlefield simultaneously. A 2025 early access was delayed into 2026 and finally began in March 2026, with Steam early access landing in June 2026.
